What would you call something that is one-half women and the other half an aquatic creature? Mermaid Mythology began many centuries ago with the sirens of Greek Mythology. The sirens believed that mermaids had the torso and head of a human and the bottom of a fish or dolphin. It is believed that mermaids would swim up to boats to sing to the sailors and enchant them, distracting them from their work causing them to walk off deck. Mermaids might have been sited by sailors but the thought of such a creature makes me have no beliefs in them at all.
Stories of the mermaid began in 1000 BC. The first known story started in Assyria when a goddess by the name Atargatis fell in love with a mortal shepherd and killed him. Mourning after the death of her love she jumped into a lake hoping to turn into a fish. Legend has it that she became a mermaid but with the body of a fish, and the head and legs of a human being.
There have been many frauds and hoaxes about mermaids. Many of the hoaxes may include the Fiji mermaids, paper mache models, or parts of dead animals stitched together. The Fiji mermaids were introduced in the 19th century by P.T. Barnum. Barnum’s creation of the mermaid included the deceased upper half of a monkey sewn to the bottom half of a fish. Many believe they have seen a mermaid but have no actual proof of their citation. Therefore there are many non believers, yet some people still believe in the mythical mermaid.
The thought of a half human half fish seems impossible. I have no beliefs in it whatsoever. If such a thing existed I think one would have been captured by now considering that there have been so many sidings dating back to 1000 BC. Believe in it or not, this myth will always be around.
