The Mothman has terrified the people of West Virginia since the 1960’s. The Mothman is described as being gray in color with glowing red eyes, wings, no arms and six feet tall. It is said that it lets out a high pitched squeal. Some eye witnesses say the eyes were located near the shoulders, suggesting that Mothman has no neck. The debate on whether Mothman is real or not has been on going. I personally believe that the Mothman is real.
One of the most famous sightings of the Mothman was in the mid 1960’s when Mr. and Mrs. Scarberry were driving near the area dubbed the “TNT Area” where the Mothman was believed to live. They saw a tall human-like figure with wings, Mr. Scarberry sped up to over one hundred miles per hour and the Mothman spread its wings and was able to keep up with the car without flapping its wings. Later in the same month, a family was on their way to visit a family friend while on the way there they saw red glowing eyes circling the TNT Area. When they pulled up to their friend’s house they saw a huge dark gray figure rise from the ground as if it had been lying down. The family ran into the house as the creature followed them and looked in through the windows. The owner of the house reported hearing the creature on several other occasions, describing it as being similar to a woman screaming. Many believers say that the Mothman sightings are connected to the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967.
Some scientists have explained these supernatural sightings were merely people sighting a rare crane which is about six feet tall with red patches on its head, explaining Mothman’s red eyes. Other nonbelievers think it is absurd and impossible for a part human part moth creature to exist. Some people don’t believe in Mothman because they are scared and think if they don’t believe in Mothman then it will go away. Also, some nonbelievers think that the people who see the Mothman are either insane or on drugs.
