Over the centuries the griffin has taken many shapes and many roles. The griffin has the head, wings, and claws of an eagle with the body of a lion to indicate that one must combine intelligence and strength. It has the speed, flight and penetrating vision as an eagle with the strength, courage and majesty of a lion. No one is sure whether or not this creature is truly real but I, for one, do not believe it is even physically possible for lion and eagle to be combined unless genetic engineering has taken effect.
The only plausible evidence that these creatures did in fact exist are the stories told and the art presented. People believed griffins came from Northern Russia, Ethiopia, and India. They were said to be the guardians of hoards of gold high in the mountains and defending it against all who wanted some of it. Some say the griffin was good, some say it was bad. In later Greek art the griffin was depicted as a fierce beast and no longer a protector. The ones who said the griffin was good (church people) saw it as "a symbol of the earthly and divine natures of Christ".
The implausible is that there is no physical way that a lion and eagle could be combined unless today’s technology and science found a way to do so. There are no traces of any evidence that these winged lions ever really existed except for within our minds.
I do not believe that a Griffin could have or ever will be a real creature. It just doesn’t make any sense how a lion and eagle can be combined unless, like I have stated before, genetic engineering gave way.
